About Earth Institutes and the Northern California Earth Institute

The Earth Institute concept was pioneered in Portland, Oregon in 1993, and there are now Earth Institutes and numerous affiliates across the United States and elsewhere in the world. Over 325,000 people have participated in Earth Institute programs, accomplishing over 1.9 million personal and group environmental actions, in 139 countries, and involving over 2400 organizations from middle schools to Fortune 500 companies.

The Northern California Earth Institute (NCEI) was started in 1996 organizing nearly 100 discussion groups in our area. NCEI is a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization that strongly encourages participants to continue their group work with friends, family, neighbors, colleagues at work, in our wider communities. Discussion programs have proven most appropriate for community groups, schools, businesses, and faith-based organizations.
